How to Play Kalooki 40
-
Each player receives 13 cards and the rest of the cards comprise the stock. The stock is placed in the middle of the players. The first card is turned facing upward and placed next to the stock. This card represents the discard pile.
-
A player must draw a card from either the stock or discard pile.
-
Then, they can form melds or play existing cards on melds that have already been laid off. Third, he must get rid of a card by discarding it.
-
The next player begins his turn by drawing a card from the stock or retrieving the previous player’s discard.
-
In order to lay off cards on existing melds, a player must have already formed at least 1 of his own melds. Each player’s first meld must total at least 40 points.
-
The hand ends when a player goes out by drawing a card and melding but 1 card, which is then discarded.
Scoring
Points can be tallied in a couple of ways. Face cards represent 10 points, Aces are valued at 11 points, and all other cards are counted according to their face value. The first way to keep score is to add the value of the cards remaining in each of the players’ hands to the winner’s score.
The second method allows the winner to add the value of his melded cards to his score. Plus, the other players must add the value of their unmelded cards as a penalty to their own score.
