How To Play Gin Rummy Against a Defensive Opponent
While Playing Gin Rummy against both, the offensive and defensive opponents a player obviously has to follow some significant strategies. And without proper game plan a player at all cannot continue to exist long particularly against a genuine defensive opponent. A defensive player always remains cautious and plays accordingly.
A player should not knock while playing against a defensive opponent. In its place he must decide only to play for gin. Once a player does not knock, usually a defensive opponent feels hopeless, because he actually cannot lay off the cards and that too according to his prior game plan. And the foremost intention of a defensive player, as being observed is to hold those cards that he is predetermined to lay off. Naturally he will start to release those cards without further delay. Thus a player really can confuse a defensive opponent.
A different and one of the most effective playing techniques against any defensive opponent is to select speculative cards most often. This has to be done just to compel him in obliterating the positive value of his hand by means of holding lots of surrounding cards as feasible to hold by him.
If a player while playing Gin Rummy against a superior defensive opponent picks up an unmatched card or a stiff, he obviously should hold it, if three more cards already have been played. His defensive opponent is ever alert to judge his move to avail the option of going gin.
Usually a player’s turn completes when he discards. One card has to be discarded and to be placed on top of the discard pile face up. If a player picks up the defensive opponents discard, say 7h, he obviously should replace it by discarding a different card and not the same ranked card. It is not at all fair to discard the same valued card, as a player must not communicate his opponent that he is on to form a sequence or a run with the opponents discard (7h-8h-9h-10h). It is rather good if the defensive opponent holds his own 7s and hearts.
A severe defensive opponent is rather dangerous to deal with. Never offer him a chance to presume your move by unnecessarily throwing any card before him. It might help him to win the game.
